Traffic Generation Strategy

In the continuing Series on the Top 10 Internet Marketing Strategy Essentials today’s topic is Traffic Generation Strategy. Traffic is the life-blood of any web site. Without Traffic you have no business. It’s the old Billboard -In-The-Desert theory. You can have the best Billboard (Advertising) in the world, but if it’s out in the desert, no one is going to see it. You need to have your Advertising in a high traffic place, where the people are going to see it.

Traffic Strategy

Traffic Generation Strategy

There are 3 main ways to get Traffic to your web site:

  • SEO – Search Engine Optimization
Arguably the best way to generate traffic, SEO is complex and time consuming, but has Big Results.
  • Affiliate Traffic – Using partners to drive traffic for you, in return for a commission on sales of your
    products or services.
  • Advertising – Simply buy traffic. This is the fastest, easiest way to get traffic to your site. You can buy
all the traffic you want from search engines and other traffic sources.

Another great source of traffic is Social Media. Since there are so many people using social media sites on a daily basis,
Social Media Marketing, is emerging as one of the best ways to generate traffic. Get people talking about your product, service, or brand. Or for the best of all worlds, advertise on Social Media sites.

Search Marketing is a fast, easy way to generate traffic to your web site. You place Text Ads, Banner Ads on the top search engines, and you are virtually guaranteed to attract customers.

Email Marketing is still King! Interacting with your customers can give  you a distinct advantage over the competition. Capturing email addresses of your customers can give you a way to communicate and market to your customers in the future.
Having a good customer list can be invaluable to any online business.

Mobile Marketing is the future of Online Advertising. You need to be where the customers are, and they are always in reach of their Mobile Devices. Smart Phones, Tablets, Lap Tops now dominate the market.

Blogging / Article Marketing / Content Marketing is a way to get the word out about your Product Services and Brand. This is also a great way to create quality Incoming Links (a major component of SEO).

Steve Renner Gives SEO Advise

Steve Renner has long been considered an Internet Marketing Expert, and authority in SEO. Now after being away for over a year he’s back, and Steve Renner Gives SEO Advise with a series of articles on the subject including:

So what’s next for SEO, well how about Back Links. One of the main ingredients for Optimizing your Page for better Search Ranking ius having Back Links. You do need to know, that all links are not equal. If your article or ad is about Dog Training, a link from your cousin joe’s skateboarding site, will not be as effective as a link from a well known dog training site, like Dog-Obedience-Training.com

Back Links from Authority sites in a related category are the best. Links from other High Ranking Bookmark sites are also preferable. Acesse.Com is developing a submission service for all it’s members that offers am affordable way to submit your site to around 50 Top Bookmark Sites.

Along with Good Relevant Content, Incoming Links are very important to your Search Ranking. Outgoing Links can aslo give you an advantage. If you link out to other Relevant Authority sites, this can also give your Search Ranking a boost. Important Authority sites can include .gov and .edu sites.

As in our example of a Dog Training site, believe it or not, links out to Veterinary Colleges, like Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, or Government Agencies that deal with animals like Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service | USA.gov will help your Search Rankings.

Here’s a good tip for you, this is a link to a .gov web site that provides answers on a wide variety of subjects, Answers.Us.Gov They have information on just about everyrthing under the sun, and would you believe that they have information on Internet Services, and Social Media, well they do.

Sergey Brin Google Interview

Sergey Brin showed up at the recent Web 2.0 Summit and recorder this 18 minute video interview with John Battelle,  available on YouTube and at www.steverenner.com

Sergey Brin Video Interview with John Battelle

Talks about Google / Twitter Deal – says he’s “Excited to see an entrepreneur go out and be successful, as with Biz Stone, 1st  on Blogger and now even more with Twitter.”

Google has an “Alumni Community” which makes it easy to form deals and partnerships.

Denys Google tried to buy Twitter.

Economy of attention. It’s not all in the search box. Starting out Google was working on CPM low end of the monitazition, and spent years developing adwords. It’s hard to predict where the future value / successes may lie.

The internet as an advertising medium is very efficient / compared to traditional media.Ad rates on the Internet are going to go up.

Google is entering Mobile, Advertising, Social, Book Search, and can they compete effectively.

Gooogler creates Products / Services out of need example: Gmail, Android. Is there potential Google Mobile hardware in the future? Possible, but Google does work closely with the manufacturers.“G1, we worked very closely with HTC on the design.” He added, “you can’t create software completely divorced from how the hardware is designed.”

On Bing, do you use Bing, “Yes I use all thge search engines out there”.

Bing reminds us that Search is a competetive market, there is a lot of cool stuf, that has carried over from MSM LIve.

It too bad that Yahoo wants to get out of search, “I do think Yahoo had a number of interesting innovations there and I wish they would continue to innovate in search.”

“The world is evolving, and people consume information in different ways.”

Uses Chrome for Mac. Pre Beta stage, but is usable now.

Digitizing the worlds books, he is surprised at all the controversy over this, “I’m optimistic that we will be successful and that we can provide access to 10′s of millions of books”.

Twitters New Project Retweet

Twitter Introduces Project ReTweet. If you have been on Twitter for a while you know about Retweet. This is where you you see a post you like and want to share it with your followers.  Now Twitter is making this officially part of their platform.

Twitter Introduces Project ReTweet

Twitter Blog Describes it this way:

Some of Twitter’s best features are emergent—people inventing simple but creative ways to share, discover, and communicate. One such convention is retweeting. When you want to call more attention to a particular tweet, you copy/paste it as your own, reference the original author with an @mention, and finally, indicate that it’s a retweet. The process works although it’s a bit cumbersome and not everyone knows about it.

Retweeting is a great example of Twitter teaching us what it wants to be. The open exchange of information can have a positive global impact and the more efficient dissemination of information across the entire Twitter ecosystem is something we very much want to support. That’s why we’re planning to formalize retweeting by officially adding it to our platform and Twitter.com.

Twitter’s Biz Stone says:

“Retweeting is a great example of Twitter teaching us what it wants to be. The open exchange of information can have a positive global impact and the more efficient dissemination of information across the entire Twitter ecosystem is something we very much want to support. That’s why we’re planning to formalize retweeting by officially adding it to our platform and Twitter.com”.

Fire Fox Twitter Plugin already has this function automated. They want to open the API up for developers to create ReTweet apps and make it a normal part of the system for everyone. I think this is a great idea!

Twitter Has New Home Page

Check out the new Redesign of the Twitter Home Page, it’s pretty cool!

Twitter Home Page

The new focus is on Search. This is a great idea, now you can zoom in on any topic or person you want. Then they even list the top topics, very cool.

Twitter founder Biz Stone comments on the new redesign:

Helping people access Twitter in more relevant and useful ways upon first introduction lowers the barrier to accessing the value Twitter has to offer and presents the service more consistently with how it has evolved.

The he goes on to say:

Twitter began as a rudimentary social tool based on the concept of status messages but together with those who use it every day, the service has taught us what it wants to be. From features invented by users to applications built on the platform, we’re still discovering potential. Twitter has moved from simple social networking into a new kind of communication and a valuable source of timely information. Also, it’s fun.”

Learning By Experience

Defining a “tweet” for the uninitiated and explaining how to create an account doesn’t resonate with everyone. “Why would I want to do that?” is a common reaction. However, demonstrating the power of Twitter as a discovery engine for what is happening right now through our Search and Trends often awakens a sense of wonder which inevitably leads to a much more compelling question, “How do I get involved?”

More Work Ahead

The open and timely exchange of information will have a positive impact on the world and Twitter has a role to play. We have a lot of work to do when it comes to the quality of our search results and trend analysis but repositioning the product to focus more on discovery is an important first step in presenting Twitter to a wider audience of folks around the world who are eager to start engaging with new people, ideas, opinions, events, and sources of information.

We’ll likely continue to make changes to the Twitter home page as we respond to feedback and ideas. We’re eager to see if encouraging a sense of wonder and discovery leads to a better first impression of Twitter.

Twitter has hit Critical Mass, as it has become as common place in our culture today as Kleenex and Coca Cola. Twitter has gone from a “Quirky” knid of social site with the wierd name to a household word around the world, and an accepted way of communication.

China Blocks Twitter

China Blocks Twitter >  Censorship by a government has got to be the worst possible injustice to any citizen of our planet.  Now, after blocking YouTube they are going after Twitter and other Social Media sites.

china-blocks-twitter

photo courtesy of:  China Economic Net

Here is a report from the Silicone Valley / San Jose Business Journal

Reports from China Tuesday said that Twitter, Yahoo Inc.’s Flickr and other popular social media and Web sites have been blocked there two days before the anniversary of the 20th anniversary of the crackdown at Tiananmen Square.

Chinese authorities have a history of being uncomfortable with their inability to control what gets said on the Internet, most recently shutting off access to Google Inc.’s YouTube site in March after footage was posted showing the country’s China’s crackdown on protests last year by Tibetans.

June 4 is one of their most sensitive dates, marking the anniversary of when tanks were sent into Tiananmen to crush weeks of student and worker protests, killing an untold number of them.

China is a fast emerging market, especially for Internet Business. I have a number of friends from China, and we do a lot of business there. In fact we are looking at opening an office there. This type of government censorship is scary…

Real Time Search

Real Time Search is the future of the Internet. With an online connection anyone can instantly be informed of events as they happen. Here is a cool video on the Evolution Of Information.

Evolution Of Information

We are a Want It NOW – Instant Gratification society, and web give us this Instant Access. With the evolution of real time applications like Text Messaging and Micro Blogging we can tune in real time to each others thoughts. Now everyone is scrambling to deliver information faster!

  • Google has declared real-time search to be one of the biggest unsolved challenges it faces.
  • The NYTimes put a link to a new real-time view of all its news stories on the front page of its site.
  • Facebook announced a new feature that will let users be notified instantly when their friends interact with media related to themselves on the site.

Real time also means information can be quickly out of date. One thing I have learned in 11 years online is that things change at the speed of light, and you always have to stay ahead of the curve, or get left in the dust.

In an information hungry society, the question really becomes “Time”. How much time do we have, and what should we spend our time on?

What interests me may not interest you, there is no “One Size Fits All” for information consumption. There’s only so many hours in a day, and with all the information available it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is to take a step back, take a deep breath and focus in on what’s important to you, and enjoy the short time we have here on this planet. Your Time – now – That’s Real Time!

Sorry, this was intended to be an article about Real Time Search, I didn’t intend to go all philosophical on you here but I just felt it so I went with it.

Anyway… we’ll get back to Real Time Search in the next update ;-)
